In Carcastillo, on the doorstep of the Bardenas Reales, in a desert landscape that is extremely dry today, but where 38 million years ago a vast salt lagoon stretched out, its waters flowing towards the Mediterranean Sea and forming the Ebro River basin... on very poor clay-limestone soils lies the Azul y Garanza estate. An estate that was taken over in 1999 by Maria, her brother Fernando Barrena and Dani Nogué Sanchez.
Their daily work consists of recreating genuine vineyard ecosystems in order to bring life back to these poor, arid soils, encourage biodiversity and make the vines more resilient to the extreme conditions of the area.
The approach is very natural, with indigenous yeasts and minimal intervention. They use the old narrow, semi-underground concrete vats to work with gentle pump-overs and maintain stable temperatures.
