33: Palais Curieux May 2024

By Thomas & Louise Buisson  •   3 minute read

Spring is here with full force, and so are the new arrivals! Something for every taste and every budget! With some beautiful and surprising gems like the Frères Soulier in the Gard region, in Savoie the domaine du Gringet where Dominique Belluard's spirit still hovers around the slopes of Mont-Blanc, the domaine Jean Daugé and Sébastien Fezas, its charismatic creator in the heart of the Gers, and finally the domaine Goisot in Saint Bris le Vineux (aptly named...) and their sparkling, digestible, and mineral Burgundies!

So, let's begin...!

First stop at the Frères Soulier in Saint-Hilaire-d'Ozilhan in the Gard region. Established since 2015, Charles and Guillaume live in symbiosis with the 20 hectares of the estate. Here, vines, olive trees, animals, and wild plants are in perfect harmony, yielding wines that are more surprising than one another. The brothers love to break the mold and offer us U.F.O.s: Unfined Rosé, Blanc de Noir, botrytized Syrah, "blouge" (a blend of white and red)... natural wines that are truly captivating.
Quantities are very limited, and we have created a pack of the six different cuvées!

The next stage takes us to the foot of Mont Blanc, in the Arve valley, on the Ayse vineyard, at the domaine du Gringet. After Dominique Belluard's passing in 2021, the estate was taken over by Vincent Ruiz, a talented young winemaker who had notably worked at Franck Balthazar in Cornas. The estate is now named after the grape variety so dear to Dominique Belluard, an endemic Alpine varietal to which he gave international recognition. Let's not be chauvinistic and state it clearly, the wines of domaine du Gringet are undoubtedly great mountain wines. 3 Pack proposals to share the bottles as much as possible.

Terminus in a neighboring region. Here we are in the Gers, near Eauze, at the domaine de Jean Daugé. Sébastien Fezas vinifies 2 to 3 hectares out of the 30 that the estate possesses, the rest being intended for sale. And the least we can say is that it's worth it. Syrah, Tannat, Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Manseng present, through the different cuvées, a tonic, invigorating, and sometimes even electrifying thread. Cuvees that rarely leave us indifferent.

Big arrival of the 2022s from Goisot!

This is an estate close to our hearts. For several years, the name Goisot has commanded respect and is a reference in this northern Burgundy vineyard. From Côtes d'Auxerre to Irancy, passing through Saint-Bris, Ghislaine and Jean-Hugues Goisot, supported by their son Guilhem and his wife Marie, enhance the flagship grape varieties of these appellations: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, but also Sauvignon and Aligoté. Pure, precise expressions of great sensitivity. Biodynamics at its highest level!!!

Vincent Ruiz, remember that name !! In addition to being part of the Domaine du Gringet adventure as explained above, Vincent Ruiz, who trained at Domaine Balthazar in Cornas, decided in 2020 to vinify micro-cuvées from grape varieties dear to his "artichoke heart"... no, his Ardèche heart ;), Syrah and Grenache! Buying organic grapes from a winemaker friend, whole cluster fermentation, very light punch-downs, few or no additives, Vincent does everything to deliver emotional, unpretentious wines that will touch you. We are delighted to welcome him to the Cave du Palais.
