Tasting: Niepoort Tawny is aged in casks for an average of three and a half years. The grapes come from vineyards in the Cima Corgo region, in the Douro Valley. They are vinified in lagares, before aging in small, old oak barrels in the Niepoort cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Niepoort Tawny is an excellent gateway into the magical world of Tawnies. The grapes come from low-yielding vines in the Cima Corgo region of the Douro Valley. A relatively young wine, it is a blend of wines from different harvests, aged for an average of three and a half years in small oak barrels in the Niepoort cellars, in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Porto Tawny keeps well for several years, although it does not improve with age. It does not produce sediment and does not need decanting.
Niepoort was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort. For over 150 years, Niepoort has been dedicated to the production of Port wine, 150 years of accumulated knowledge passed down from generation to generation. The Niepoort cellars, located in Vila Nova de Gaia, are a magical place where Port wines age at a different pace, where good traditions endure, where casks, bottles and demijohns are carefully monitored one by one so that the final result is always a Port with a capital P.
