The very discreet vineyard in Gevrey Chambertin belonging to the Roty family produces anything but discreet wines. Since 1817, the family has been cultivating vines and producing great wines. According to Joseph Roty, his family's vines can be traced back even further, to the time of Henri IV! Today, Pierre Jean is at the helm with his sister and mother. Since 2001, he worked with his father Joseph (who passed away in 2008) and his brother Philippe, who unfortunately passed away in 2015.
The Roty vines are among the oldest in the Côte d'Or – 1881/1882! It is perhaps thanks to their great respect for nature that these vines continue to produce today.
In the vineyard, nature does the work. For a long time, horses were used, and even his great-grandfather followed the lunar calendar. Harvesting is done at high maturity.
In the cellar, there is a cold and very long maceration to extract the most color and fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Until 2014, everything was done in barrels. Today it is more modern, in stainless steel tanks before maturation in barrels (predominantly new barrels).
Joseph Roty's wines often express intensity. They are for an audience of patience – 10, 15 to 20 years of aging (in a good cellar!) will allow you to truly discover these famous wines!
